DJ Burnt Bannock

#mosthumblest

Darcy Waite (That’s AWSM!, 7TH GEN, Bullseye) stars as Kevin Cardinal, aka DJ Burnt Bannock, a struggling Cree DJ who realizes that if he is going to achieve the success he dreams of, he needs to make a mega move to prove to the world (and himself), that he is seriously talented… Too bad he’s about to do it all wrong.

With the support of his cousin Allan (Paul Rabliauskas) and the tough-love of his Kookum (Joy Keeper) to keep him in check, no matter how bad Kevin screws up, it will be hilarious.

Season I of DJ Burnt Bannock takes us through the two weeks leading up to the biggest moment of Kevin’s life — releasing his self-made music video online. After Kevin gets fired from his job as the Senior Aerobics teacher at the Indigenous Friendship Centre, Kevin’s Kookum is furious. She has raised him and paid his room and board for almost his whole life, but it’s time for Kevin to grow up.

Kookum demands that Kevin join his cousin Allan working at her fast-food joint, Bannock Burger. There Kevin sees Wesley, his high school nemesis and the owner of Bar 204, the hottest club in townTM, who offers Kevin a gig to fill a last-minute cancellation.

This could be Kevin’s big break.

Allan convinces Kevin that he needs to build a following. They need to make a music video, but making it gets them arrested. And they need to call Kookum from bingo to come and bail them out. After making some new friends in lock up, Kevin wins a Hawaiian shave ice truck in a shady poker game, and Allan's car gets stolen — along with all their DJ gear.

Wesley will allow Kevin to use the house gear if he does him a favour (he'll even pay him) — it's Banana Shake Wednesday at Bar 204, and all Kevin needs to do is shake his thing for some dollar bills and bring the thunder down under to Ladies Night - as the main attraction.

The next night, Kevin is Kookum’s date for a special dinner at a fancy country club to celebrate her achievements in business. When they get there something doesn’t feel quite right. Kookum is the only guest of the mayor, who seems to have tricked her into a “romantic” evening.

Kevin is left to his own devices,

which is never a good thing.

On the day of the big DJ gig, Kevin wakes up to find out he’s been pranked. And when it comes time to perform, the insecurities that have plagued him since childhood attack him.

Can Kevin face his demons to put on

the show of a lifetime?

And will Allan finally find his own true path,

maybe, for the first time in his life,

without Kevin?

The next day, Alice from the Friendship Centre has a big favour to ask — for Kevin and Allan to speak at Career Day for the youth at the centre. Even though she was the one who fired Kevin, Allan is sweet on her, so he convinces him to go. Kevin needs to make a pitstop at the nearby Indigenous-run radio station — to drop off some new music.

His confidence rising, Kevin makes one more decision that will change his life forever.
